IF IT WASN'T FOR THE GOSPEL
If there is one thing that is true about the Gospel, it is that it's "tangible". Instead of denying realities of daily life, it embraces, redeems and sinks into every part of people's lives!
Time and time again we heard testimonies that revolved around the saying "esta en el piso" the Cuban way of saying "it's at rock bottom". Whether referring to the country's economy, electricity, gasoline crisis, or medical, health and educational collapse - most Cubans live with the stress of trying to figure out how to make ends meet in order to just supply the bare minimum needs for their children. One pastor, a dear friend who is a "jack of all trades" (a genius and go getter), confessed to me with a quivering voice, as we drove in the car, "I have never before in my life been at 'zero', but now I am". Our dear bothers and sisters in Christ are in desperate times, and it is only the "tangible gospel" that is keeping many of them focused, strong, and committed to the cause of Christ.
HIS TIMING AND PROVISION
Tears of joy flowed from their eyes as Kathy & I shared with the Cuban pastor and his wife,the story behind the $1500 donation from a church in Gainesville, GA - an offering given to help with this weekly meal program. Honestly - they just couldn't hold back the tears, unashamedly letting their tears fall for minutes.
Then Sonia went to grab a wee booklet that shows the entries and expenses for their meal program. Ins and outs of donations from church members, neighbors, believers and unbelievers - in the form of money, garlic cloves or rice etc. The balance the day we arrived was 700CUP (Cuban pesos) less than $3 and they had no idea how they would make means for the 90 elderly they attend to twice a week. Once again the purse was empty and they could only depend on God. We too, sat with tears at how truly amazing the God we serve is ... attentive to every detail and with perfect timing.
