Cuba: Listening beyond the headlines

Cuba: Listening beyond the headlines

What we are hearing directly from Cuba.

For most of us, headlines shape our understanding of what is happening between nations. If you’ve been following recent news about Cuba, you’ve likely seen reports of fuel embargoes, U.S. efforts toward regime change, and the possibility of tighter restrictions on air travel and financial transactions.

The situation is critical and complicated.

But the reason we are writing today is not to repeat the headlines. Just two weeks ago, we were on the ground with pastors and their families in Cuba, and what we are sharing comes from both being with them and continuing to hear from them daily. What they are facing is deeply personal, painfully close, and calls us to prayer and action.

We would be grateful if you would pause, read, and consider how God might invite you to help carry these, your brothers and sisters.

THE DAILY REALITY - What survival looks like right now

As conditions continue to shift rapidly, pastors and church leaders are sending short, urgent messages describing what they are seeing unfold around them.

One pastor shared these updates with us:

“People are already buying food to store up.”
“All government transportation has stopped, and all travel between provinces has been suspended.”
“Today it was announced that gasoline is no longer being sold to private vehicles.”
"University and upper high schools are turning to online efforts"

This is the daily reality behind the headlines.

For pastors and their families, the burden is even greater. They are not only trying to meet their own basic needs, but also caring for congregations and neighborhoods who look to them for hope, help, and leadership.

EVEN THE COURAGEOUS GROW WEARY

A pastor’s wife shared this with us…

Asking simply that we would stand with them in prayer. Her message wasn’t dramatic or political — just honest. Daily life has become heavy in ways most of us rarely experience.

“We had a major plumbing blockage in the house and now we have to break up the floor to see what’s happening. The washing machine broke and we can’t wash clothes. No electricity, no gas…
And my soul is groaning…
But my prayer today has simply been, ‘Lord, give me the strength to see You in the middle of everything."

This is the same pastor’s family who, along with their church and believers from neighboring congregations, are miraculouslyobtaining, cooking, and delivering over 170 hot meals every Tuesday and Saturday to the elderly and most vulnerable in their city.

Yes — even the courageous grow weary.

And yet they keep showing up. They keep serving. They keep trusting.

“It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”
Lamentations 3:22–23

THEIR HOPE HAS NOT BEEN TAKEN

In the middle of shortages, uncertainty, and daily strain,
God’s Church in Cuba remains hopeful.

Not because circumstances are easy — they are not.
Not because answers are clear — they are not.

Their hope is in the Lord.

Where else would they look?
He alone is their hope.

They speak often of learning to fix their eyes higher, to trust more deeply,
and to hold fast to the One who has never failed them.

Pastor's wife says
“We are learning about the glory of God and the Kingdom of God —
and at the same time, we are learning what is not the Kingdom of God.”

LET THEIR PRAYERS BE OUR GUIDE

"God help us"
"God guide and watch over us"
"Give us wisdom as your church to know exactly how to act in these times"
"Help us to not be consumed by the overwhelming events of every day"
"Give us a longer vision"
"Let us see what you see"
"Allow us to join you in what You are doing"

Thank you for standing with our Cuban brothers and sisters
